To-do list anxiety

When your to-do list is what’s stressing you out.

A list is supposed to make you feel lighter. If yours makes your chest tighten, the list may be the problem, not you.

Why lists backfire

Writing things down does help. Unfinished tasks have a way of popping back into your head, and one study found that just making a specific plan for an unfinished goal quieted those intrusive thoughts (Masicampo and Baumeister, 2011).

But the list itself can turn into a source of stress:

Get it out of your head

The fix isn’t to stop writing things down. It’s to make writing them down cost nothing.

In todrift, adding a thought is one field and one tap. No project, no tags, no priority to pick.

So it’s off your mind in a breath.

Only look at the big ones

Your thoughts float as soft blobs. The ones due soon or marked as mattering grow big and bright. The rest stay small, too small to read.

You don’t have to scan the whole list to find what’s urgent. It’s the biggest thing on the screen.

So the list never shouts.

Nothing keeps score

No overdue section, no red numbers, no streaks. A thought past its date just grows, and it waits.

Finished thoughts burst when you pop them, then fade away on their own.

So opening it feels calm, not like a reckoning.

What helps, with any list

These work on paper too. todrift is built around them.

Questions

Is it normal to feel anxious about a to-do list?

Very. A long list can feel like a list of ways you’re behind. If anxiety is getting in the way of daily life, though, please talk to a doctor or a mental health professional. An app is no substitute.

Should I stop using a to-do list?

Usually not. Writing things down is what lets your mind stop holding on to them. Try a shorter, gentler list first.

How is todrift different from a normal list?

Thoughts float as blobs instead of rows, and their size comes from how soon they’re due and how much they matter. Nothing is ever marked late. When you do want rows, View all shows the full list.

Is todrift free?

Yes. Adding, sorting, syncing and the full list are all free. todrift Pro adds separate boards (work, home, that side project) and more themes, and you can try it free for a month.
